Busy time for Ballincollig players

While the local season comes to an end, some of our players are participating in international events.

At the end of May Ciaran O Donoghue was selected to compete at the Prague Grand Prix,where he reached the last 16 in the singles event.

A week later Dylan Grace performed at the prestigious World Junior Circuit event with coach Conn Higgins..

Dylan had a notable win against the highly ranked Tonkovic(Cze) and narrowly missed out on a spot in the last 32.

In early June Conor O’Callaghan and Paddy Vaughan travel to the para events at the Spanish and German Opens.

At the end of June Ciaran and Dylan will represent the Irish schools at the senior international schools event in Jersey.

Congratulations to Shane O’Connor who will coach the cadet boys while Conn will be busy coaching both the cadet girls and senior boys.

Mixed results as Nationals

Last weekend a number of Ballincollig Table Tennis Club’s players took part in the Junior National Championship in the New National Indoor Arena in Dublin. This is the last National event of the season and is the most prestigious events of the year.

 The under 18’s was the first event to begin on Saturday with Dylan, Oisin, Conor, Paddy and Ciaran taking part. Dylan lost in the quarter finals after a great battle to Thomas Earley. Conor and Ciaran meet in the semi final of the plate, Ciaran winning on this occasion. Ciaran went on to to win the plate. Nora was our only repersentative in the girls events, she played well in a very strong group of players. 

Next was Cian and Adam in the under 13 event, the two players had to replay their last 16 match which was very tough on both players as Cian had won his previous last 16 game and was about to play in the quarter finals. They then lost these games.

A new event took part this year the doubles. This was a great event all of our 3 teams reached the quarter finals.

On Sunday first up was the under 15’s. Adam, Cian, Richard, Issac and Ciaran. All players played very well and got through their groups. Ciaran made it to the semi final which he lost to Thomas Joyce. Ciaran came 3rd.

Conor and Paddy were in the Para event. Both players made it to the final with Paddy coming home with the gold medal and Conor silver.

Thanks to all parents who were there supporting the players. Thanks also to head coach Conn Higgins and to Alan and Dylan for helping Conn.

Next event is the UCC ranking on the 1st/2nd of April in the Mardyke Arena.

Cian makes Irish team

Ballincollig Table Tennis Club is delighted that one of our players, Cian Ross, has been chosen to represent Ireland at the Primary Schools International in Cardiff on the 7th – 9th of April. Cian has been playing table tennis for over 5 years. He started playing in Scoil Eoin, who have a great history of winning Munster and All Ireland Schools events. Cian was part of the team who won the All Ireland last year in Dublin. He also played for Munster at the interpros in Dublin last year and is hoping to be on the team again this year. This year has been a great one for Cian. He won his first under 13 Munster event in Kinsale against his club mate Adam. He also won the Ballincollig Ranking at the start of March in Colaiste Choilm. It’s great to win your home event. He came Third in the Ulster Open in Belfast, his first All Ireland trophy and at the Connacht Open, another all Ireland event, in February he was determined to win and he did. Cian has also taking part at the National training camps. We wish Cian all the best in Cardiff.

 

 

Ballincollig Players take 6 titles at Munster Ranking event

On the 11th/12th of March almost 80 table tennis players gathered in Colaiste Choilm to take part in the Ballincollig Munster Ranking tournament. Ballincollig Table Tennis Club had 18 players taking part. Shane O’ Connor was head coach for the weekend as Conn Higgins was away with national team. First up was the under 13 event with Adam, Cian, David and James taking part. This was James Kingston’s first Munster ranking event and he played very well. Cian played a blinder during the whole tournment and was rewarded by winning this event with Adam coming 3rd.

The under 11’s took place in the sportlann and Samuel and Alicia Leahy represented BTTC. A lot of these players have been playing for a few year!!! Alicia won the girls event.

In the under 15’s the club had Adam, Glenn, David, Ryan, Jack, Issac, Ciaran and Filip taking part. Jack came 2nd in the plate. In the final it was Adam and Ciaran , two Ballincollig players. Ciaran won retaining his under 15 title from last year.

Sunday saw the turn of the under 18’s first thing in the morning. In this event the club had Oisin, Issac, Filip, Conor, Jack and Ciaran. Conor is just back from Italy where he represented Ireland. Jack came second in the plate. After some very close games. Ciaran and Filip were in the final. Another all Ballincollig match and Filip’s first final. Ciaran was the winner on this occasion.

Next was the Under 21’s  Shane and Nora represented the club. Shane was a man on a mission and didn’t disappoint going on to win this event. Nora came 4th.

In the Vets Dan Foley was our only player. Dan is our elder gentleman and has played table tennis all over the world.

Seniors was the last event of the weekend with Shane , Ian, Darragh, Nora and Dan taking part. There was a lot of great matches all day. Ian and Shane met in the semi final and after a very intense match. Ian came out the winner 3-2. Ian was in the final v a Tralee player. Winner Ian Brown.

Overall it was a great weekend with BTTC taking 6 out of 11 titles. Well done to all.

Clonakilty Grand Prix Results

On the 5th of March the club had  6 players competing in the second Munster grand prix tournament, this time in Clonakility. After some great games the results were in division 1 Issac Leahy 2nd, Jack O’ Keeffe 3rd, David Manning 4th and Ryan Power 5th. Samuel and Alicia Leahy played in division 3. Samuel came 2nd and Alicia 6th.

 

Munster Schools Report – Kinsale

On Wednesday 1st of March many of our players descend on Kinsale to take part in the second Munster Schools League tournament. In the primary school section Cian Ross and Samuel Leahy represented Scoil Eoin.  They had won this section last time but found the matches very tough this time around and came 4th in their group.

In the secondary school section Ballincollig Table Tennis club had players representing 3 schools. Colaiste Choilm had 3 teams. They won division 1, 2 and 4 and came second in division 5. Players on these teams include Nora O’ Sullivan, Jack O’Keeffe, Ciaran O’ Donoghue, David Manning, Greg Barrett, Ryan Power, Olan Lehane and Leah O’Keeffe

Oisin played for Kinsale Community Scholl and came 2nd in their division. The club also had Filip Gnyszka and Ryan McCarthy playing for Ballincollig Community School who came 3rd and 4th in their groups.

The next outing for the schools will be the All Ireland Schools qualifying competition on the 8th of March in Kinsale. Best of luck to all.

Silver for UCC at Intervarsities

FB_IMG_1488272427515Last weekend saw the intervarsities take place in the Mardyke Arena. College’s from around Ireland took part. Ballincollig Table Tennis Club had Colm Murphy, Darragh Buckley and Alan Walsh on the UCC team. Former BTTC players Declan O’ Brien and Alex Cooney also played for UCC and UCD. In the team final UCC were up against it in their match against UCD. It went to doubles. After some very close 5 set matches UCC lost. On Saturday the singles take place, again Alan , Darragh and Colm represented UCC with Shane O Connor playing for CIT. Alan and Shane reached the quarter finals and had to play each other. Alan won and reached the final where he played UCD’s Tom Davis. Tom won 3-1. A great weekend of table tennis was had by all.

GREAT RESULTS AT CONNACHT OPEN

Last weekend saw a number of our Junior and Senior players travel to Castlebar, Co. Mayo to take part in an All Ireland event,the Connacht Open. On Friday night the seniors started with men’s singles and restristed singles. In these events we had Oisin Herberich, Paddy Vaughan, Shane O’ Connor, Ian Brown, Dylan Grace, Colm Murphy, Declan O’ Brien and Alan Walsh competing.

 

On Saturday we had 4 players taking part in the Under 15 event Issac Leahy, Richard Thompson, Cian Ross and Ciaran O’ Donoghue. All players reached the last 16 with Richard and Ciaran playing each other. Unfortunately Issac, Cian and Richard were beaten.  Ciaran played the gentle giant Kristijonas Dapkus in the final and Won!! Ciaran O’ Donoghue Under 15 Connacht Open Champion.

In the mens doubles Dylan along with Alan Patterson beat club mates Alan and Declan. In another quarter final Ian and Shane lost 2-3 to Ciaran and partner David Talyor. Dylan/Alan beat Ciaran/David in Semi final. Dylan/Alan lost to Gavin/Tom in final.

Alan Walsh partnered Mia O’ Rahilly Egan in the mixed doubles final. However, they lost to Gavin McGuire and Katie McGlone.

In the men’s Under 21’s both Alan and Dylan reached the quarter final stage where they were beaten by Tom Davis and Zac Early.

Ian, Declan,Dylan and Alan reached the last 16 of the Men’s singles.Alan Walsh played Ryan Farrell in men’s semi-final and Dylan Grace played Gavin McGuire. Both players lost.

Sunday was the turn of our under 13’s,18’s and disability players.

Paddy Vaughan took part in the disability standing and won. Champion!!!

In the under 13 the club had Cian Ross and Adam Buckley representing the club.The boys came through their group stages with ease and they both reached the semi final where  Adam and Cian played each other. Cian won 3-1. All eyes were then on Cian. After a great game against Joe Sheard Cian Won!!!! Cian Ross Connacht Open Under 13 Champion.

In the girl’s Under 18 Nora O’ Sullivan was our only entry where she came runner up in the plate.

In the boy’s Under 18 event Ballincollig Table Tennis Club had Dylan, Richard, Oisin and Paddy taking part. All players played some great matches with Dylan getting through to the final. After a very tough match against Thomas Early Dylan won 3-1!!! Dylan Grace Under 18 Connacht Open Champion.

It was a great weekend for the club with our junior players winning 4 events and senior in semi and finals. A big thank you to MIchael Joyce and the committee for a well run and enjoyable event. Also thanks to coach Conn Higgins and senior players who helped with coaching.

Munster Open Report

ttiBallincollig players had a busy weekend at the Munster Open in Kinsale last week. 13 players took part. It was an early start on Saturday  morning ,8.30am, with the under 18’s. Nora O’ Sullivan was our only female representative at this level. She  played some of her best table tennis and her matches were very close. Nora came 5th a great result at an All Ireland event.  Dylan Grace, Richard Thompson, Conor O Callaghan, Oisin Hererick and Paddy Vaughan took part with Issac Leahy and Ciaran O’ Donoghue playing in their first national under 18 event. The standard was very high. Dylan, Ciaran and Richard made it through to the second round while Conor, Paddy, Oisin and Issac took part in the plate. In the plate semi final we had Conor v Paddy and Issac v Tom Walsh from West Cork. Paddy went on to win the  plate final v Tom. Ciaran and Richard did not go any further than second round but played some great game against very experienced players. It was up to Dylan to carry the Ballincollig flag. In the semi final he played Charlie Fitzgerald and what a game. He held his nerve and won one of the most exciting games of the tournament. Dylan faced Alan Patterson in the Final. Dylan won 3-0, Munster Open under 18 winner Dylan Grace.

Next up was the Under 13’s. Cain Ross, Adam Buckley and David Manning were playing for Ballincollig. Again the standard was very high with a big group of players coming down from Ulster to play. David playing in his first National event this year made it through to the semi final of the plate. Adam and Cian came through the second round. Adam was unlucky not to get to the qurter finals. Cian was on top form and narrowly missed out on a semi final place. He came 5th in under 13.

We had 2 players taking part in the disability standing event Conor and Paddy played each other in the final and after a epic battle Conor won out in the end.

Screen Shot 2017-01-17 at 12.08.47Sunday saw the Under 15’s and 11’s take to the table. First up was the Under 15’s. Ciaran, Richard, Issac, Cian, Adam and Jack O’ Keeffe were playing here. Richard and Jack, who was playing in his first National tournment this year, went on to take part in the plate. Richard was in the final and won. After some very tough games Issac came 17th, Adam and Cian came 9th. Ciaran came through the quarter final betting Dillion Byrne 3-1. He was up against it in the semi playing Irish number 1 Art. It was a close game Art winning 3-1. Ciaran came 4th.

Screen Shot 2017-01-17 at 12.10.56In the Under 11’s  Samuel Leahy took part. There is no coaching in this event with a more relaxed feeling for the young players. Samuel played a lot of matches and gained great experience.

A big Thank You to coaches Conn Higgins and Shane O’ Connor. To Brenda who kept us in supply of toasted sandwiches for the weekend. Well done to all our players.
