Stiga Munster Open, Killarney

This weekend, 2/3/4 December, sees BTTC players take part
in the much anticipated Stiga Munster Open at the INEC, Killarney. This event
is the highlight of the Munster Table Tennis calendar and is the culmination of
many months of preparation by the Munster TT Committee.

This year the entry is huge, with top players coming from
the UK.

Last year’s Mens’ Singles winner, Ryan Jenkins from
Wales, is returning for another crack at the whip. Will any Ballincollig senior
players stop him in his tracks????

Ballincollig has historically send a very large entry to
this event, with this year being no exception. 20 players will compete in 56
separate events, with some players taking part in the maximum 5 events, making
for 3 very busy days for all.

BTTC players have put a tremendous effort into training
over the past few weeks, with Munster Table Tennis hosting an intensive
training camp in Youth Reach Hall last Sunday, 27th. Thanks to Ben Haughton for giving up another
Sunday to table tennis.

The BTTC Committee wish all our players, from the U10s
playing their first Irish Ranking to our more seasoned players, every success. We hope you all have an enjoyable successful
weekend in Killarney.

Dan Foley

We once again wish a speedy recovery to our Honorary Life
Member, Dan Foley. Dan is still out of action and players and parents alike
miss him at training sessions. Get well
Dan and hurry back.

Niall Brown

Most of our players take part in sports other than table tennis and Niall Brown has excelled at his other chosen pastime. Niall has recently received his Black Belt in Karate, the youngest person in Ireland to do so in recent years. Well done Niall!!! We are all very proud of you.

Ulster Junior Open – Newtownabbey

6 Ballincollig players made the arduous journey to
Newtownabbey, Belfast last weekend to compete in the Ulster Junior Open, a
junior ranking competition. On Saturday, our only U12 player, Karl
Walsh came through the opening rounds with ease but bowed out at quarter final
stage, to finish in a very commendable 5th position. In the boys U17
competition, James O’Reilly had an unlucky draw, but played several matches in
the run up to his win in the Consolation event. Colm Murphy finished in
Joint 17th position and Alan Walsh did very well to finish in 6th position.

The Ballincollig Girls had a great day in the U17 event,
with Edel O’Reilly finishing in 2nd position and Emily Burns just behind her in
3rd position. Well done to coach,Ben Haughton and to all the players and
West Cork, Beech Hill, as well as BTTC.

The Ladies’ title was taken by Ballincollig’s Deirdre
Murphy, with Emily Burns and Edel O’Reilly, coming in 2nd and 3rd positions.

Alan Walsh were 3rd and 4th place winners.

undoubtedly also be taken by Ballincollig players.

On Sunday last, 9th Oct, the 2nd part of the Beech Hill
Junior Open was held. The U12 and U17 events which were postponed from
the previous weekend kicked off at 10am. The U12 boys event was won by West
Cork’s James Kelly. Our own Karl Walsh and Niall Brown came in 3rd and 4th
positions respectively after a fun-filled and good-natured 3/4 place
playoff. Both boys played some fantastically close matches during
the day and made the game look so enjoyable. BTTC’s Zofia Wawrzniak, who
is still an U10 player, gained valuable match experience today and finished in
5th place in the girls U12 event.

The girls u17 event was won by Aisling Healy from
Kinneigh. She overcame BTTC’s Chloe O’Halloran by 3 sets to nil in the
Final. Emily Burns took the 3rd spot with Killarney’s Brielle Brady in
4th. Chloe Brown overcame some tough opposition from Killarney and West
Cork to finish in 7th position. Well done girls!!

The boy’s u17 event was also dominated by Ballincollig
players with three of them in the top 4. The winner was Brian Kelleher
from Kinneigh, with Colm Murphy, Alan Walsh and Gearoid O’Donoghue in 2nd, 3rd
and 4th places respectively.

Well done to all our players over the two weekends. Thanks,
Colm Murphy joint 9th and James O’Reilly, Alan Walsh, Gearoid O’Donoghue all finished in a very respectible joint 17th position, using this event as a warm up for their main event, the U14s on the following day. In his first event as a fully fledged U12, Scoil Eoin’s Niall Brown and Karl Walsh came through the opening rounds without much bother and both did fantastically well to finish the day in joint 9th position.

Scoil Eoin’s Paul Cooney had no problem getting through the opening rounds in the U10 event and was the outright first place winner. The final against Glenburn’s Owen Cathcart was watched by his Ballincollig club-mates and a very proud Dad in the viewing gallery.

BTTC SENIOR PLAYERS TO IRISH CLASSIFICATION

This Saturday, 27 August, sees 5 BTTC players travel to Dublin City University to compete in the first National tournament of the new table tennis season. Competing in the ladies event will be Emily Burns and Deirdre Murphy. This is Deirdre’s first season playing solely as a senior player, having represented the Irish Schools Squad in her last junior event at the Senior Schools International in Birmingham in June. She has been training hard over the last few weeks and hopes to qualify for the main classification event on Sunday. Joining her will be Emily Burns. Emily, still an U17 player, is a member of the Munster team who won the Junior British League qualifying event in Grantham, Leicestershire, last month.

Ballincollig mens’ squad will be represented by Ian Brown, Joe Kelleher and James Herley. From the mens’ event on Saturday, 4 will qualify for the main classification on Sunday. All three players took part in a recent intensive training camp in Ballincollig and are hoping to secure top places in their first event of the season.

Two BTTC players receive automatic qualification for the Senior Classification, Declan O’Brien and Edel O’Reillly. Despite both being just 16, Declan and Edel have both represented Ireland at senior level in the UK. They are ranked 11 and 7 respectively and hope to raise that ranking a notch or two on Sunday as they head into the domestic and international season ahead.

Best of luck to Deirdre, Emily, Ian, Joe, James, Declan and Edel, who will be travelling with BTTC Head Coach, Ben Haughton.

MUNSTER JUNIOR GIRLS VICTORIOUS IN GRANTHAM

The Munster Junior GirlsTable Tennis team of Ballincollig’s Emily Burns and Leah Daly, and Kinneigh’s Aisling Healy had a hugely successful weekend at the Junior British League Qualifying event in Grantham, Lincolnshire.

The girls sailed through their programme of matches to a thrilling play-off against Burton Uxbridge at the end of the day. They finished in 1st position, beating their English opponents 3-nil. Emilly, Leah and Aisling secured a place for the Junior Girls in the next stage of the League in Wolverhampton in October.

The Munster Cadet team of Ballincollig’s James O’Reilly, Gearoid O’Donoghue and Alan Walsh got off to a shaky start with some tough matches against Team London. They drew that match 3-3 and went on make some spectacular wins. However the match ratio went against them as the day wore on and the team failed to qualify for the next round. They finished 3rd in their group of 6 – an excellent result for three u14s in their first British League event. Better luck next year!

The Junior Boys team of Kinneigh’s Barry and Brian Kelleher, Damien Tobin and Killarney’s Michael Lagan also had a very eventful day. They faced tough opposition from the very start and though all boys played exceptionally well and won many matches, they didn’t finish in the top two in their group. The Junior Boys learned a lot from their weekend, got experience against players with different styles of play and look forward to using that experience on the domestic scene from September.

The Cadet Girls team of Killarney based Valentina Poutkalyte, Devon and Brielle Brady and Courtney Drummond had a great day in Grantham. They won some fantastic matches. The young girls, none of whom have played at this level before, gained valuable experience which will benefit them hugely at Munster and Irish Rankings in the season ahead.

All in all, while the entire Munster Junior British League Team had a successful and enjoyable weekend in Grantham, the weekend undoubtedly belonged to Emily, Leah and Aisling. Well done girls and congratulations to Coach, Alan Hurley.

There will be no table tennis training in Scoil Eoin on the following dates due to a combination of school holidays and Bank holidays. Monday 18th and 25th of April, Monday 2nd May.

Irish junior Nationals

The weekend of 9/10 April saw 12 junior players travel to the Airlingus Social and Athetic Arena in Dublin Airport to play in the most prestigeous junior event of the table tennis calendar - Edel and James O’Reilly, Alex Paul and Sarah Cooney, Niall Brown, Chloe O’Halloran, Gearoid O’Donoghue, Emily Burns, Deirdre Murphy, Alan Walsh and Colm Murphy, though we did lose one of the girls to Grafton Street on Saturday!

Saturday kicked off with the under 12 boys where Niall, Paul and Gearoid all sailed through their first round matches with ease. All three went on to the second round where they came up against tough opposition, but played really well to finish in joint 9th positions.

In the u12 girls, Chloe also came through the first and second rounds and quarter finals easily to finish in 4th place – a great achievement for her as she has been playing table tennis for just a year.

Emily Burns had a fantastic, but tiring, day in the U17 girls where she improved greatly on her previous ranking to finish in 5th place. Deirdre Murphy, in her last junior tournament, finished in 4th place with EdelO’Relly in 3rd place.

The U17 boys saw James, Alan, Colm and Alex come through the first rounds without much bother. James was unlucky to be beaten UCDs Matt Finlay at the quarter final entry phase. Alan and Colm progressed further to the quarter finals – this proved to be a great warm-up for their main event on Sunday.

Sunday started off with the U4 boys, Gearoid got the day off to a great start by beatng the mucher higher ranked Irish International Ryan McConkey in his opening march. Gearoid was trailing by two sets but fought back to win the match 3-2. In the second round he dispensed with Alex Gillen by 3 sets to nil. He then qualified for the quarter finals where after several fantastic matches he lost to the eventual Champion, Ryan Farrell and he finished in 8th position. Colm Murphy was denied his quarter final place by Kinneigh’s Brian Kelleher in a thrilling 5 set match.

James and Alan had yet another 5 set battle. James took the first 2 sets, Alan fought back to take the next two, but the quarter final place went to James in the end. He was denied his semi-final spot by Club Donic’s Conor Mullally and finished in 5th position.

The U 14 girls saw Sarah Cooney and Chloe O’Halloran face tough opposition in the opening rounds. Sarah finished her day as runner up to Irish International Eleyna McGlone in the plate.

Paul Cooney and Niall Brown had a great day on Sunday. They both came through the opening rounds unbeaten to the semi-final stage where Niall played Goleen’s James Kelly and Paul played Connaught’s Eddie Ditchburn.

Both semi-finals were a joy to watch. Niall played his heart out in a 5 set battle with James. Paul and Eddie’s match was noisy, but hugely entertaining! The final saw Paul and James Kelly fight to the bitter end with James being the eventual winner. Niall finished his day in 4th position. Both boys had a great days table tennis and, sorry mums and dads, they have another 7 years of junior table tennis ahead of them!!!!

All in all, a great end to the Irish Ranking season. Thanks, as always, to Coach Ben Haughton and to his Assistant Coach for the weekend, Ian Brown.

Adult Senior Training: Cancelled until further notice.

Munster Ranking in West Cork

Today was a great day for Ballincollig players at the penultimate Munster Junior Ranking in Dunmanway with 27 Ballincollig players taking part, some for the first time. We took 5 1st places out of 8 events.

The day started with the U10 boys and girls. Great results from Niall Brown, Paul Cooney and Eoin O’Callaghan who came 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively. This was Eoin’s first tournament, having joined the Club just two weeks ago. Well done Eoin!!

Another first timer, Zofia Wawrzyniak, who is till under 9, was presented with her first medal as runner-up in the Plate.

The U12 boys event was won by Karl Walsh in thrilling 5 set final against Goleen’s James Kelly. Gearoid O’Donoghue took the third place after seeing off Tom Walsh in the 3/4 playoff. Paul Cooney came in 5th place with Niall brown in 7th.

Chloe O’Halloran, who is not yet playing for a year, did very well to finish third in the U12 girls event. Leah Daly finished just behind her in 4th position.

The U14 boys was won by Ballincollig’s Alan Walsh in a thrilling point for point final with James O’Reilly. 4th place went to Colm Murphy, who narrowly lost our to Kinneigh’s Brian Kelleher. Gearoid O’Donoghue, still an U12 player, took a well-earned 5th place.

Sarah Cooney overcame Killarney’s Lynn O’Shea to win the girls U14 trophy. Chloe O’Halloran took the 4th place.

The Ballincollig U17 girls dominated the U17 event, with Edel O’Reilly taking 1st place, followed by Deirdre Murphy in 2nd. Kinneigh’s Aisling Healy was in 3rd place, with our own Emily Burns, Niamh Buttimer and Emily O’Reilly in 4th, 5th and 6th places respectively. Chloe Brown finished just behind them, doing very well to finish in the top 8 at this level whilst still an u14 player.

The last matches of the day were left to the U17 boys, with Ballincollig again finishing on top. Alex Cooney took the first place, followed by Kinneigh’s Brian Kelleher in 2nd and our own Donatas Jakovlevas in third. James O’Reilly, Alan Walsh, Colm Murphy and Eoin Murphy all finished just behind them to secure top 8 positions. James and Alan battled it out again in a 5 set 5/6 playoff with James finishing on top this time. Colm and Eoin also played an extremely close 5 setter, with Colm just finishing on top at 13-11 in the 5th set. Alan Tobin had some great early matches but was unlucky to be eliminated later in the competition by the eventual winner.

All in all, an enjoyable and hugely successful day for Ballincollig Table Tennis Club, the players and, of course the Head Coach, Ben Haughton, who gave up yet another Sunday to make the success possible.

All players are now waiting with baited breath to see if, after the rankings from this competition are complete, they will be invited to attend the Top 9 competition in Enniskeane next week. This is the last Munster Junior Ranking of the season, where the top 9 players in each age group battle it out for the last time to claim the Munster No 1 title for the season. Good luck to everybody.

Cork Indoor Sport Awards

Six Nations Table Tennis Championships

The weekend of 11/13 March saw Edel O’Reilly and Declan O’Brien represent Ireland at the Six Nations Table Tennis Championships at the University of Limerick. The event kicked off on Friday evening with the girls winning their matches against Guernsey, 4-1 and losing 3-2 to Wales. They started Saturdays games a little behind on the ladder but made up for it against Scotland in the morning, only to lost out to the English later the day. However, the Irish Junior Girls, including Edel, were delighted to finish with bronze medals.

The Junior boys, including Declan, fared a better, winning Fridays matches with ease but lost to the Scottish on Saturday. They finished in 2nd position, well deserving their silver medals.

On Sunday, Ballincollig’s Deirdre Murphy was invited to join the Junior Girls to represent Ireland at the singles event. A busy day was had by the Ballincollig crew with some very tough matches against top players from England, Wales, Scotland, Guernsey and Isle of Man. Edel came through the first round with relative ease, only to be beaten in the quarter finals by Abbie Millwain, the No 1 seed for the event. Declan also came through the first round, only to lose in the next round to Irish team-mate Ashley Robinson. Deirdre had a tough draw in the first round, and after some entertaining matches, went on to win runner-up spot in the plate, losing to Connaught’s Sarah Timlin.

Well done to Edel, Declan and Deirdre for being chosen to represent their country at this prestigeous event.

Stiga Senior National Championships – ALSAA, Dublin Airport.

The weekend 5/6 March saw four players travel to Dublin for the Senior Nationals. Our coach Ben Haughton described the results as the best the club or any Munster club has ever had in this event.

Deirdre Murphy played in the women’s singles, doubles and U21 events. Declan OBrien, Ian Brown, and James Herley all played mens singles and U21.

Results were as follows Deirdre Murphy finished in the top 8 in the U21 event where she beat Clodagh McCullogh 3-0 in her opening match. Deirdre went on to take a set from No 2 seed, Ashley Given in the Senior Ladies event and once again, did very well to finish in the top 8.

Ian Brown and James Herley were well placed in the U21 event and went on to finish joint 9th in the senior men’s event. Declan O’Brien went through to the quarter-finals where, he came back from 2 sets down to level the proceedings at 2-2, only to lose to John Murphy 12-14 in the fifth. Declan finished joint 5 overall.

Well done to Deirdre, Ian, James and Declan in what was the most prestigious senior event in the country.

Weekend 11/13 March, Ballincollig players will represent Ireland at the Junior/Cadet Six Nations Championships at University of Limerick and the following weekend will see many of our players travel to UCD for the Senior Interprovincials – the highlight of the senior table tennis calendar.

More Connaught Open News & Results 26/27th February

The last weekend in February saw 9 Ballincollig players travel to Castlebar for the Connaught Junior Open. On Saturday, James O’Reilly and Colm Murphy were in fantastic form and finished 5th and 6th respectively after a long day of thrilling matches. Gearoid O’Donoghue did very well to finish joint 17th in an Irish ranking of players at least two years older than him.

However, Sunday was Gearoid’s day when the topped the initial group stage, dropping just one set. He went on to finish 4th – no mean feat for an Irish Ranking event. In the under 17 girls, Edel, Emily Burns, Deirdre Murphy all came through the initial group stage with ease. Emily O’Reilly did not have it so easy however, but went on to play several matches throughout the day. Deirdre and Emily Burns did fantastically well to finish in the top 8 and Edel was pipped at the final stage by Ashley Givan. Edel came home with the silver medal.

In the boys U17, Eoin and Colm Murphy sailed through the opening stages and both finished in the top 16. Declan O’Brien also went through the initial groups with ease and came home with a silver medal, losing only one match in the day to Sam Logue of Leinster.

All in all, a fantastic weekend of table tennis at Breaffy House. Thanks, as always, to our coach Ben Haughton, who guided the players through the day.

Connaught Open 26/27th February

Breaffy Hotel in Castlebar played host to the Stiga Connacht Junior Open over the weekend, with over 160 players travelling from all over Ireland to compete. This was the first time since the early 1970s that Connacht has hosted a Junior Ranked tournament, and players and spectators alike were treated to a feast of top class table tennis. The Junior Boys saw Irish International and number 2 seed, Sam Logue from ALSAA TTC, take the title in straight sets over Ballincollig’s Declan O’Brien. O’Brien was in superb form throughout the tournament with his trademark backhand winners stunning the opposition.

The quarter finals of the Cadet Boys witnessed the match of the tournament, pitting Ballincollig’s James O’Reilly against the current Irish number 1, Eastpoint’s Ryan Farrell. O’Reilly took the first set, and Farrell had to dig deep to take the second on a score of 22-20. O’Reilly took the next and had Farrell on the rack in the fourth, before Farrell steadied and hit back claiming the set, and then took the fifth in classic fashion. O’Reilly had let him off the hook, but certainly has laid down a marker of his future intentions, and underscores this Cadets potential. Farrell went on to claim his 3rd title of the season

The Junior Girls title was taken by tournament favourite, Fivemiletown’s Ashley Givan, on a score of 3-1 over Ballincollig’s Edel O’Reilly.

Ballincollig Open

Last Saturday say BTTC host the Ballincollig Junior Open, a Munster Ranking Event. Clubs from Tralee, Killarney, Montenotte, Cobh, Kinneigh, and West Cork and of course Ballincollig ttc itself. We had some new players from Scoil Eoin taking part in their first ever tournament and we hope it will not be their last. Ballincollig kept four perpetual trophies on home ground with Gearoid O’Donoghue winning the Under 12 Boys event, James O’Reilly won the U14 boys event, Sarah Cooney won the U14 girls event and Colm Murphy won the U17 boys event. This was a huge win for Colm as he is still an Under 14 player and pulled out all the stops to beat higher ranked players some of whom are 3 years his senior.

Our under 10s had a busy day with one of our new members, Emiliya winning the Plate and proudly wore her medal for the day! Niall Brown was unlucky to be beaten by James Kelly of Goleen in the final. Niall took the second place with Paul Cooney in third.

The under 12 girl’s trophy went to Brielle Brady of Killarney with teammate Valentina Pudkalis taking second. Ballincollig’s Chloe O’Halloran was third.

Under 12 Boys was won by Colaiste Choilm first year, Gearoid O’ Donoghue. He beat Scoil Eoin club mate Karl Walsh in a thrilling final. Niall Brown and Paul Cooney did very well to finish in the top 8 in a category where most of the boys are a few years older than them.

Under 14 girls was won by Sarah Cooney and our own Chloe Brown finished well up in this event.

Under 14 Boys was won by James O’Reilly. James stopped Alan from making it three straight wins in Munster in a thrilling 5 setter.

The under 17 girls trophy went to Aisling Healy of Kinneigh, narrowly beating Ballincollig’s Deirdre Murphy. The two Ballincollig Emily’s came in third and fourth.

The under 17 boys was won by Colm Murphy, his first major win. We are all thrilled for him. He beat the higher ranked Michael Lagan of Killarney. Ballincolligs Alan Walsh and Colm’s brother Eoin came third and fourth. With Shane O Connor 7th and Alex Cooney 9th

Week 3

Important Note for all players and parents for 2011.

Under Irish Table Tennis, Irish Sports Council and BTTC club rules, training sessions cannot go ahead without an adult supervisor being present. Supervision up to now has been done by the club committee. Late January 2011 the committee will publish to all parents a roster for supervision. It is anticipated that each parent will have to supervise at least one training session a month. It will be the parents responsibility to ensure that there is adequate supervision for the session they are rostered for. This may mean arranging a swop with another parent to ensure the session goes ahead. This is now normal practice in many clubs and sports organisations around the country. Please co-operate with this new practice. In the event of supervision not being in place the training session cannot go ahead.

Colaiste Choilm win 3 Titles at All Ireland Schools Finals

In The All Ireland Schools Finals held last week in Colaiste Choilm the hosts were defending 3 of the 6 titles on offer At U15 boys and U18 boys and Girls In the U15 Boys, home side Colaiste Choilm looked favourites to retain the title. They were drawn against a very tough St Fintan’s Sutton team in the semi-final, containing Ireland’s top ranked Cadet Ryan Farrell and top 10 National Junior Conor Beades. Farrell, Beades and Daniel Murphy opened up a 3-0 lead for the Sutton side, before Irish Junior International Declan O’Brien led a spirited Cork fight back to level at 3-3. Once again, the importance of Doubles at this level was apparent – the defending champions held their nerve to record a 5-4 victory with two doubles wins. In the Final, Colaiste Choilm looked more in control against High School Ballinahinch. Shane O’Connor, Colm and Eoin Murphy and Declan O’Brien all recorded straight sets victories to establish an unassailable lead and the home school were once again National Under 15 Champions.

Under 18 Events
As the Colaiste Choilm Under 15 Boys defended their title, it fell to their school colleagues at Under 18 level to follow suit. In the Girl’s Final, a strong Colaiste Choilm, with wins by Edel O’Reilly, Emily O’Reilly, Dawn Gleeson and Aisling Healy were in command against Victoria College in Belfast, and ultimately recorded a 6-3 victory. In the Boys event, Blackrock College progressed to the Final with a 7-2 victory over Collegiate School, Monaghan. Colaiste Choilm also looked in top form as they defeated St.Aloysius of Athlone 9-0 to set up an eagerly anticipated Final. In the Final, Will Gallagher recorded a victory for Blackrock, but that was not enough to stem the tide of Cork victories, with Scott Shellard, Andrew Reck, Ben Ahern, Ian Brown and Alex Cooney all recording wins.

Coach Louise Long and team of Katie and Elayna McGlone, Laura Finn and Sarah Cooney (Ballincollig) then faced into a battle against England, with the winners favourites to claim gold. Ireland were unlucky to lose 6-4, with the two matches dropped in the Doubles proving their downfall. Sarah Cooney recorded an impressive 2 wins against the English girls, with the critical doubles match going to 12-10 in the 5th set – Ireland went on to claim an impressive silver, but as always in sport will look to go one step further in 2011 – they were not far off defeating the highly rated English girls. In the Singles, all 4 girls progressed through their groups to the last 16. Laura Finn lost to England’s Abigail Griffith at this stage, while Katie McGlone and Cooney were unlucky to be drawn against each other – Katie joined sister Elayna in the last 8 following a 3-1 victory.
Coach Shay Logue and team of Mark Gordon, Ryan McConkey, James O’Reilly (Ballincollig) and Jonathan Porter had to regroup for the next day’s singles. In the Consolation Event, James O’Reilly will be delighted to claim gold, with a great win over Scotland’s Yazer Rasouf in the Final.
A great performance by Ireland’s Cadet Girls at the Cheltenham Select saw Ashley Givan add the Cheltenham Select title to her Cadet Six Nations and Senior Nationals medal haul. Team-mate Edel OReilly (Ballincollig) was also in top form and progressed to the Final before Givan pipped her to the title.
