Results from Sweden and Connaught Open

Last weekend Conor O Callaghan travelled to Malmo in Sweden with the Irish Para team. On Saturday he reached the quarter finals of the mixed class junior. Sunday was the class 6 event where he also reached the quarter finals beaten by the world 26 ranked player. Conor was very happy with these results and it’s great to see him back on the table tennis circuit at this level again.
A number of Ballincollig players took part in the Connacht Open last weekend. Friday night started with the men’s singles with Shane O Connor and Richard Thompson taking  part and Ciarán O’Donoghue was in the restricted singles.
 Up first on Saturday was the under 15’s Cian Ross and Thi Ly Cashman played for Ballincollig. Thi Ly played great and was up against Silke in the final, repeat of last week’s Munster final. Unfortunately it wasn’t the win she wanted it was 2nd at an All Ireland event. Cian had some tough games coming 9th in this event.
In the under 21 Ciarán came 9th and Richard 11th.
Men’s singles Shane and Richard reached the last 16.
Men’s restricted singles Ciarán reached the semi-finals.
Sunday morning was the under 18’s. Cian, Erik, Richard and Ciarán took to the tables. Cian came 13th.After a long day Ballincollig had 3 players in the quarter finals. Richard was beaten by Kristijonas,who went on to win the event. Erik lost to Tom. Ciarán beat Conor. Ciarán was in the semi final but was beaten by Kristijonas. Ciarán came 4th in this event. Under 18’s girls was a tough event with Thi Ly and Thuy Linh came 9th and 7th.
Thuy Linh also came second in the mixed doubles event with Conor Nugent. Overall a weekend of mixed results. Thanks to Conn Higgins for a very busy few days coaching.
Next events are the All Ireland Nationals on the 1st – 3rd of March in Lisburn.
We will be running the Ballincollig Munster Ranking event on the 9th and 10th of March.


Munster Ranking Event – Kinsale – Results

Last weekend Ballincollig Table Tennis Club members travelled to Kinsale for the third Munster ranking of the year. It was run by South Coast table tennis club. On the Saturday competing for the club in the  under 15 boys were David Manning and Cian Ross. After some tough games in the first round, Cian made it through to main draw and David played for the plate and went on to win It.
Cian played some great matches and reached another final against Nick McCloud. It was Cian’s day, winning a great match 3-0.
Thi Ly Cashman  took part in the under 15 girls and came second in a round robin format. 
Sunday morning the under 18 event began Cian and David was joined by Erik Olsson, Conor O Callaghan, Ciarán O Donoghue and Ryan Power. It was great to see Ryan back at tournments. Ryan, Conor and Erik were all in the same opening group along with Sean Lisk. Unfortunately both Conor and Ryan didn’t get through this tough group. However, they both reached the final of the plate with Conor winning.
In the main draw David played Erik in the quarter final with Erik winning.
Erik then played Cian in the semi final.
Ciaràn played Isaac Leahy of South Coast.
It was Cian v Ciarán in the final with Ciarán winning 3-1.
In the under 18 girls Thi Ly was joined by her sister Thuy Linh. The girls played a round robin format. The final game was Thuy Linh against Silke Heinen from Leeside. A great game was had by both players with Thuy Linh winning 3-0.
The Senior event started at 1.30. All player’s except David and Ryan took part. Thi Ly  reached the last 16, Thuy Linh and Cian the quarter finals. Erik and Ciarán reached the semi-finals playing Kevin O Keeffe and Philip Shaw. The boys, who are both 15 on December 4th, held their cool against more experienced players both winning 3-1.
After a very close final Ciarán won 3-2. 
It was a great weekend for the club with all competing players coming home with medals and trophies. Thanks to coach Conn Higgins for a busy weekend.


Ulster Open Results

Last weekend Ballincollig Table Tennis Club players travelled to Lisburn to compete in the Ulster Open. Friday night started with the men’s singles with Paddy Vaughan, Erik Olsson and Richard Thompson taking part. Paddy got through the group stage but lost in the third round.
Saturday morning in the under 15 Cian Ross and Thi Ly were flying the flag for Ballincollig. Cian came 8th overall in a very tough event and was runner up in Band 1 and Thu Ly came 7th.
In the under 21 mens event Paddy came 5th and Richard 9th. In the under 21 women event Thuy Linh came 5th.
On the Sunday in the under 18 girls Thuy Linh came 6th and Thi Ly 11th. In the boys event Ciarán came 6th, Erik 13th, Richard 11th and Paddy and Cian joint 17th.
Thuy Linh won the women’s doubles with Nicole as partner.
Thu Ly reached the semi final of the cadet doubles.
Over all not a bad weekend.
Thanks to coach Conn Higgins who had a busy time.
Next up is a Munster Ranking event in Kinsale.

Ballincollig beginners in good hands with Irish International Walsh

Ballincollig Table Tennis Club was started in 2002 by a group of parents who’s children had no where to learn how to play table tennis. The club has players of all levels from the beginner to those who play fun and those who compete in Munster, National and in International tournments. Our beginners train in Scoil Eoin on Tuesday night with our improvers and competitive squad in the community hall Monday’s, Wednesday’s and Saturday’s.
Table Tennis is a great  for children who mightn’t like team sports. If you child is interested contact Sharon at 0868620486

Great result for Paddy in China

Huge congratulations to Paddy Vaughan who represented Ireland at the China Open last week. Paddy along with Colin Judge and coach Gavin McGuire made the long journey to take part in the individual and team events. Paddy was in a very tough group but came away with some wins and  a great experience. He reached the quarter finals of the team event and was unlucky not to get to the semi’s. 
Training in now in full swing for our improvers and competitive players. Next up for our players is the Junior Classification in Dublin on the 15th and 16th of September.
The following weekend is the first Munster event of the 2018/19 season the Munster Classification which will be run by Beech Hill Table Tennis Club in the Knocknaheeney. Entries will be taken at training this week as closing date is 13th September.

2017/2018, End of year Thank You

Training is nearly over for the 2017/18 season. There are a few people the club would like to thank.

Ballincollig Munster Ranking

A busy weekend was had by all members of Ballincollig Table Tennis Club players, parents and committee. Our annual Munster Ranking event took place in Colaiste Choilm with over 90 players taking part from all over Munster. 
Under 13’s was up first on Saturday morning, Ballincolligttc’s only entry was James Kingston who made it through to the main draw but was beaten in the last 16 stage.
Next up were the Under 15’s. The club had a big entry with Jack O’Keeffe, Cian Ross, Adam Buckley, Robert Danilovskiy, David Manning, Erik Olsson, Ryan Power and Ciarán O’ Donoghue taking part. After some good and not so good matches we had 2 players in the semi final Erik and Ciarán. Unfortunately they played each other in the semi final. With Ciarán winning. It was Ciarán v Nick in final with Ciarán winning the Ballincollig title for a third year in a row.
Erik beat against Issac Leahy for 3rd place.
In the girls under 15’s Thi Ly Cashman was on a mission and played Silke in the final but lost on this occasion.
The under 11’s also took place on Saturday afternoon. Over 20 players took part. Ballincolligttc were repersented by Jack and Cian O’Sullivan, Ben Whelan, Nico Michalik and Krzysztof Sobiech all playing in their first tournment. Jack and Ben made it through to the main draw and Cian, Nick and Krzysztof were in the plate. We were delighted when Krzysztof won the plate. A great time was had by all players and friendship’s made.
Sunday morning the Under 18’s took place. In the girls event we had the Cashman sisters Thi Ly and Thuy Linh playing with both girls reaching the semi finals. Thuy Linh reached the final and was beaten by Silke. Thi Ly came 4th. 
In the boys under 18 Cian, Ciarán, Adam,Erik, Oisin Herberich and for the first time David and Ciarán Cottor. Ciarán Cottor reached the plate semi final. David won the plate.
Erik and Ciarán O’Donoghue and Cian reached the u18 semi finals. It was Ciaran v Cian and Erik v John. Erik had a very close 5 setter game unfortunately lost. It was Ciarán in the final and won. Cian and Erik played in 3rd /4th playoff with Erik winning.
We also had the veteran’s section our own Dan Foley didn’t take part in the event this year. Philip Shaw beat Kevin O’ Brien in the final.
 New to the Munster Ranking is the intellectual disability event. There were 9 players taking part. With Harry Sorensen winning 1st division, Ben Og Brady Bates 2nd division and Craig Cleary the 3rd division. 
In the under 21’s Alan Walsh was the winner.
The final event was the mixed Senior’s. In Band 1, Ballincollig Table Tennis Club didn’t have any entries, Julia Pikus won her first Munster event with Marcus Heinen coming second.
 In Band 1, Shane O’ Connor, Alan Walsh joined Cian, Ciarán, Adam, Erik Thuy Linh and David for this event. Alan and Ciarán met in the quarter finals with Ciarán having a surprising win. Shane and Ciarán reached the semi final. We were hoping for an all Ballincollig final, unfortunately Shane lost in a close 5 setter. Ciarán won against Scott. In the final he played against Daniel and won 3-1. Well done to Ciarán on winning 3 titles last weekend.

Beech Hill – Report

Last weekend saw the third Munster Ranking take place in Beech Hill Table Tennis Club , Montenotte.

Up first on Saturday morning was the under 13’s, James Kingston represented Ballincollig Table Tennis Club and took part in the plate.

 Under 15’s was next with Adam Buckley, Cian Ross, Robert Danilovskiy, Erik Olsson, David Manning, Jack O’ Keeffe and Ciaran O’ Donoghue taking part. Robert reached the plate quarter final. Jack, playing in his first Munster Ranking this year, he took part the final of the plate and was narrowly beaten. David got to the last 16 loosing in a close 5 setter. Erik played Cian in the quarter final with Cian winning in 3 sets. Ballincollig had 4 players in the semi final. Cian played Ciaran and Adam played Nick from Southcoast club. It was Ciaran and Nick in the final with Ciaran winning in 3 sets. Adam played Cian for 3rd/4th places and after the last and longest game of the day. Cian won 3/2.

Unfortunately the second day of the tournament had to be cancelled. The under 18, seniors, vets and intellectual disability will be played on Sunday 18th February.

Connacht Open – Report

Last weekend some of our players took part in the Connacht Open in Breaffy House, Co. Mayo. This was the fourth All Ireland event of the year. Shane O’ Connor and Alan Walsh were on coaching duty as Conn Higgins was away in Hungary with the junior and cadet boys Irish team.
The senior event started on Friday night. Shane reached the last 16 beaten by the winner of this event Paul McCreery.
Saturday was the turn of the under 15’s. Ballincollig had Cian, Adam, Richard and Erik taking part. The final result for our players was Adam 7th, Cian 8th, Richard 10th and Erik 13th. Alan came second in the mens doubles and mixed doubles and 4th in the under 21’s. A great result Alan .
In the under 18 on Saturday Oisin and Paddy joined Cian, Adam, Richard and Erik. After a long day the results were, Richard 4th ,Paddy and Erik 13th Cian 17th, and Oisin and Adam 21st. A great result for Richard coming in 4th place and Cian winning the under 18 plate. Well done to both.
A big Thank You to Alan and Shane for coaching and to Rafaela for keeping us updated with results and photos.
As was mentioned above our coach Conn Higgins was away on Irish duty over the weekend, one of our players Ciaran went also. This tournament was of a very high standard. Ciaran won his opening game and was involved in 5 5 set games unfortunately losing them.
