Ballincollig had six players taking part this weekend at the first senior event of the year. The Irish senior classification was held in the National basketball arena in Dublin. Declan, Ian, Alex, Darragh, Shane and Colm were all hoping to make an early impression. On Saturday the qualifying rounds took place. Declan because of his current ranking was already qualified for Sunday. Their were six places up for grabs.
Ian, Alex, Darragh, Shane and Colm were all in action early Saturday morning. Our coach Conn Higgins was on hand all weekend to lend support. By the end of the day Ian was the only person to make it through to Sunday. Colm went out in the last 16 to Zak Wilson and Alex and Shane also lost out. Darragh who is making a comeback to table tennis this year had a tough draw but played very well. As the year goes by his ranking is sure to improve.
Sunday saw the best of Irish table tennis. Declan eventually finished 6th losing to Peter Graham in 5 sets. Ian finished 18th on the day. The overall competition was won by Paul McCreery beating Vladislaus Agurjanous.
