Ballincollig seniors are keeping table tennis in Munster alive. Declan, Ian, Shane and Colm all competed in the West Cork Open last Saturday night. If you add in missing players, Edel and Alex, Ballincollig is the power house of Munster senior table tennis.
Some of the table tennis played in the U21 and Senior events was fantastic. Early on Shane and Colm played out a gripping 5 setter. Colm coming back back from 1-0 and 2-1 down to win. Shane is probably playing his best table tennis at the moment. All four players were young enough to compete in the U21 event and they did not disappoint as all four made it to the semi finals. Declan took on Shane and Colm took on Ian. These were gripping matches and everyone was a winner as the standard of table tennis was very high. Declan and Ian won through to the final.
In the Senior event, the standard picked up a notch. On this occasion Declan, Ian and Colm made it through to the semi finals along with the Leeside senior winner Matthew Hynes. Ian scraped by Colm in one semi winning a five setter while Declan came from 2 sets down to take Matthew. In fact it was the second time Declan came back from two sets down when in an earlier round Colm went 2-0 up against him.
As Declan and Ian had also qualified for the U21 final they decided to play both finals over one match. Declan cruised to a 2-0 lead but then Ian woke up and won the next set and it was nip and tuck all the way in the 4th which Declan eventually won.
Colm and Matthew played out a “fun” 3rd and 4th match. Colm playing in his 15th match of the day many of which were five setters and clarly shattered decided to change equipment and played with Shane’s bat. Matthew won 3-1.
Once again, thanks to coach Dave for being there for the lads.
