Our Juniors and Seniors competed at the West Cork Open last Sunday and had a very successful day all round. Some fantastic table tennis was played throughout the day and many trophies were brought home.
It was a very early start for everyone on Sunday morning. The bus left Ballincollig at 6.45am arriving in Goleen just before 9am.
The first event of the day was the boys U17 where Colm, Aaron, Niall and Adrian were competing. Niall playing in his first year u17 almost caused a major upset when he went to 5 sets with James Kelly in the quarter finals. Once again Aaron and Adrian had tough draws and progresed to the plate event. Colm going into the event ranked 3rd on the day brushed aside all comers and easily beat Usamah Hussain of Beech Hill in straight sets to claim the title.
Nora O’Sullivan competed in the Girls u17 and u14 events and played well finishing 4th in both events.
Niall Brown went into the boys U14 in great form from the u17 event. Also competeing in this event were Joe Linehan, Aaron Harrington and Dylan Murphy. Dylan played very well as did Aaron and Aaron went on to win the plate event beating Adam Lazaryev of Beech Hill. Joe used the event as a warm up for the U12’s later in the day. Niall played great table tennis to reach the final against his rival James Kelly. On this occasion James was too strong for Niall.
Ballincollig had a big entry in the u10 and 12 boys and girls events. For the first time in a long while we had 4 girls competing in an U10 event. They had great fun and while they were up against very tough competition they played very well. Their coach can on the day Edel O’Reilly can be very proud of their achievements. Leah, Shannon, Aoife, and Kate all took home prizes. Leah collected 4th place in the girls U10 and won the U12 plate event beating Kate in the final. Aoife won the U10 plate.
Joe Linehan is playing the table tennis of his life at the moment. He went into the U12 event ranked second and ended up having a comfortable 3-0 win in the final against Matthew Pop of Killarney, reversing the result from the Leeside open. One of Joe’s more awkard matches was against his u10 clubmate Ciaran O’Donoghue were he had to come back from being a set down. Joe will now head into the Ballincolig open joint 1st in Munster and virtually guaranteeing himself a place on the Munster team next Spring.
Dave Manning has become a specialist at winning plate events. Dave won the U10 plate adding to his success in Leeside. Glen Buckley playing in his first ever event won the boys U12 plate. Well done to both Dave and Glen!
We had a big entry in the boys U10. Their coach Declan O’Brien has done a great job here. While we only had one winner in Dave Manning, all our players were winners for having competed. Ciaran O’Donoghue finished 6th and Cian Ross who is playing very consistently finished 8th. Competition in the U10 events is particularly strong at the moment. Kinneagh, Killarney, Leeside and West Cork have some very good players who have been competing a little longer than the Ballincollig boys.
All Ballincollig junior players can now look forward to the Ballincollig open next February. Some may even be ready to compete in the Munster open in Killarney in January.
The future is bright and well done to everyone who played. A special thanks to coachs Dave, Edel and Declan and to the parents who travelled to support the players, Carol,Brenda, Sharon and Paul.
Bring on the Ballincollig open !
