The Butterfly National Junior championships took place in ALSAA Dublin this past weekend. Ballincollig made most of the small entry we had this year by taking 3rd place in the boys U12 and runner up in the boys U12 plate.
Once again Niall Brown showed his class by coming from 2 sets down in the 3/4 place play off against fellow Munster team mate James kelly. Niall looked down and out in this opening exchanges but a few stern words from coach Dave did the trick and Niall cut loose to win well in the fifth. Earlier Niall came very close to beating the U12 runner up Dylan Grace, losing 3-1.The first two sets went 11-7,11-9 each to Dylan. Niall took the third. Dylan was beaten in the final by the highly rated U10 Owen Cathcart from Ulster.
Dylan Foley in his first ever Irish ranking event finished runner up in the plate event losing 3-0 to Laurence Shields. Dylan was 10-5 down in this first set and fought back very weel but eventually lost the set 13-11. From then on it was hard work, but great experience for him.
Nora and Auryn found the going really tough in the GU12 & 14 and BU14 & 17 events respectively. Both qualified for plate events and can be very proud of their efforts in highly competitive categories.
Colm and Shane played well but again failed to make it past the second round. Shane playing in his final junior ranking event ( senior next year ) playe some great table tennis. He finiashed second in this first round group after coming up short against Johnny Porter. That left him in a tough second round group yet again. With only one to go thorough he was up against it with number two seed Kevin Hutchinson in top form. Unfortunately Shane lost both his matches. We’ll all miss you next year Shane!
Colm cruised through his first round, winning the group. His prize for this was to be paired with former clubmate Alan Walsh. Despite a bright start in the first set for Colm alan fought back strongly take the match in three straight sets.
The eventual winner of the BU17 event was Zak Wilson from Ulster, beating the in form Ryan Farrell from Leinster.
A big thank you to all the players and parents for making the the big effort to travel to this end of season event and of course to Dave for coaching once again this weekend.
