West Cork Open Report

Last Sunday’s West Cork open was the last Munster ranking event of the year. it proved to be a great but pretty long day for all our players.

The day started off well before day break for our players. 16 players, 2 parents, and coach Dave left Scoil Eoin at 6.45am for Goleen in West Cork. Senior players travelled later in the day so in total we had 24 entries across numerous junior and senior events, the biggest of any club on the day.

For our U10 and U12 players it was their away trip. It was a very exciting day and the boys had plenty of matches. It was too early to expect medals in the individual classifications for the boys but they all played very well and showed great potential. Well done to Ronan Lucey who won a runners up medal in the Boys U10 Plate.

Some of our U10 & U12 players with Colm Murphy in West Cork, Mar 2013

Joe Linehan had a similar result in the Boys U12 plate as did Nora O’Sullivan in the Girls U14 plate.

Niall Brown continued his excellent season by winning the Boys U12 and he also took 4th place in the Boys U14 event. Niall had a very tough match in the U12 final. He won the first two sets comfortably against Adam Lazaryav from Beech Hill before losing the next two sets. He then had to dig deep in the fifth to win the match. In the U14’s Niall was beaten by James Barry of Kinneigh to 3rd place.

Colm Murphy once again had to do with 3rd place in the Boys U17 event. Colm has had two 3rds and a 2nd this year which is consistent. This time Colm drew Michael Laagn from killarney in the semi final and lost 3-0. Colm then went on to beat James Kelly for 3rd place. Shane O’Connor was disappointed to in the last 8 to James Kelly but he did go on to finish 5th overall. Auryn Harrington once again got an extremely hard draw in the U17’s and it did not get any easier in the plate for him but to his creadit he played very well.

Ballincollig once again dominated the Senior and U21 competition. Ian Brown continued his domination of both events in Munster this year. He beat fellow clubmate Alex Cooney in the U21 and beat Pavel in the Senior final. Ian was a doubt for the weekend after partially dislocation his right shoulder a few weks ago played very well and had confortable wins in the end.

A very special thank you to Sarah Ross and Shane Dwyer for travelling on the bus and helping out on the day. It was a long day for everyone but hopefully everyone enjoyed it.

Also, thanks to coach Dave for being there for all our players!

Finally, congratulations to Owen Kelly of West Cork for running a very good event and once again to Tony Higgins of Tralee for his tireless work on the computer all day.
