Saturday saw the Junior events taking place. Ballincollig had a strong representation of new young players taking part in their first events. In the U10 event Ciaran O’Donoghue was best placed finishing 6th. In the U12 boys event Dylan Foley had a very creditable 8th place also taking part in his first event. Well done Dylan and Ciaran.
Niall Brown lived up to his number one Munster ranking and easily won the U12 event. Niall also competed very strongly in the U14 event and finished in third place.
The premier event of the day was the boys U17 event. Colm Murphy, a previous winner of this competition while he was still U14 played a fantastic final against Alan Walshe of Leeside. Tension was high and you could hear a pin drop as the players swapped sets with Alan eventually winning a marathon match 12-10 in the fifth set. Well done to Colm, Niall and all the boys.
Unfortunately this year Ballincollig only had one girl competing. A combination of school exams and a general lack of female players playing table tennis at present meant that the overall numbers were low. However this did not effect the overall standard on the day and Ballincollig’s Nora O’Sullivan who is new to table tennis played in the U12 and U14 events. Nora finished as runner up in the U14 plate event and a very good 5th place in the U12 event. This was Nora’s first major event and she deserves much credit on her first outing.
Sunday was the day for the Senior events. It was a big day for Ian Brown winning both the EMC sponsored U21 and Senior competitions. It was a long day for everyone but there was plenty of competitive matches for all players.
The U21 and Senior competitions were round robin to begin with then breaking into knockout for the semi final and final. The Vets competition was a straight knock out event.
Vets & U21
The vets event was won by Paval Kopac from Killarney with Philip Shaw from Beech Hill a strong runner up.
The U21 event was very competitve and Ballincollig continued it’s strong showing in this event with four players, Ian, Colm, James and Alex competing in the semi finals. Ian beat Colm in straight sets in the first semi final while alex overcame James in the second semi final. The final was a 3 sets to 1 victroy for Ian over Alex.
The last match of the weekend was the mens senior final. James played well throughout the day but unfortunately could not crack Ian who went through the day unbeaten in all matches. Ian won the final by 3 sets to 1.
Overall it was a hugely successful and well run event. A big thank you to everyone who helped out. A special word of thanks to Colaiste Choilm for the use of the school hall and to Tony Higgins of Tralee table tennis club for his help at the top table right through the weekend. Also a big thank you to our sponsors Ballincoillig Credit Union and EMC.
